According to Seeley, oval shapes are easy, as nearly all bang styles flatter. “Blunt, straight-across bangs work great as they pack a strong style punch but can also be softened,” he says. You can even take them micro (AKA super-short), as this style is easier to pull off on oval face shapes than on any others.

If the blunt approach seems a bit severe, however, he says you can “introduce” your fringe by tapering it at the sides. “A great way to do this is by layering the bang around the face so that it blends into the haircut,” he explains. “This keeps it soft and makes it easier to grow out.”

Since heart-shaped faces are slightly wider from the top of the cheekbone up to the peak of the forehead, Seeley says side-swept bangs are the best option. “Start the sweep just on or to the middle of the brow,” he says, keeping the length of the bangs falling around the corner of the eye. “It will be feminine and pretty, yet balance the width of the face above the cheekbones to help soften the overall look.”

According to Seeley, those with square-shaped faces will want to avoid blunt lines and rely instead on face-framing texture. “Think of a Bardot-style bang,” he suggests, which is more about creating movement than snipping a straight line. “You want it to look tousled, so keep in mind that by wearing it slightly wavy or curly, [you’ll enhance the overall look],” he says. “It’s best to see a bit of skin on the face as it will soften all the features and open up the face in the right areas.”

Round face shapes, Seeley says, pair best with curtain bangs or tapered hair that falls to the chin. “Part the hair just off-center, which creates a diagonal line to draw the eyes away from the roundness and make the face appear more oval.” The bangs themselves, he says, should reach to the chin or below in order to lengthen the face shape by covering the cheekbones, which tend to be the widest part of a round face shape.

The easiest way to wear a bang if you’re oblong, Seeley says, is to have a slight A-line bang. “This will open up in the middle of your face and end mid-eye-level to create angles,” he says. According to him, it’s also best to wear these with texture, which helps to optically shorten the length of the face and add slight width to further even out the proportions.

A heavy rounded bang, Seeley advises, is great for this shape as it balances the proportions by adding width at the top of the face to match the bottom. “You can keep them straight across, but I think they are more flattering with the slight roundness and curvature to them,” he says. If you want to wear them longer, he suggests going longer than your brows. “I like for them to be just past the eyes,” he explains. “But soft with not too much hair added in.”

According to board-certified allergist Neeta Ogden, MD, an allergic reaction is basically the body fighting off what it considers dangerous; those sneezes and watering eyes are the body’s immune response to being exposed to an allergen it has deemed a foreign invader. Everything from environmental factors to lifestyle habits can impact the severity of your symptoms, Dr. Ogden says.

1. Hiding inside

While it may seem like the great indoors would be the perfect place to take cover from pollen and other outdoor allergens, there are pesky allergy-inducing factors lurking inside that you need to be aware of, too. “Things like wall-to-wall carpet or fabrics like drapes can harbor allergens like dust mites and dander for years and create chronic low-lying symptoms or exacerbate existing ones,” Dr. Ogden explains. “Similarly, hidden moisture in the home like mold can do the same.”

Dr. Ogden recommends switching out drapes for blinds and removing carpet. And while you can’t exactly reno your office, she says moving to a different area in your workplace *may* help.

2. Taking your workout outdoors

I don’t know about you, but when spring arrives, I’m thrilled to be able to run outside again. Unfortunately, outdoor activities like running, golfing, and gardening are probably contributing to your allergy symptoms. Bummer. “It’s really all about exposure,” says Dr. Ogden, adding that the allergy-prone should take caution outside during peak pollen season.

If you’d rather not abandon your outdoor pursuits (how I’ve missed you, vitamin D!), she advocates using barriers like masks, gloves, or even wrap-around sunglasses to protect you from direct exposure to the allergen. “Always wash your hands after exposure and, if possible, take a shower, making sure to wash your hair and rinse and gently wipe eyes and lids,” Dr. Ogden says. And if symptoms persist, you either need allergy medication or a visit to an allergist for allergy shots.

3. Waiting too long to pop your meds

It may be tempting to hold off on taking medication until you absolutely need to, but Dr. Ogden cautions against this. “Not taking medications early enough or waiting until symptoms are very bad—or not taking them at all—can create a strong vicious cycle that can be hard to control.”

Compounded by environmental factors outside of your control, like cigarette smoke or a coworker’s perfume (which can further inflame your respiratory passages), waiting too long to treat your allergy symptoms can make it incredibly difficult to gain control over them. And no one wants to lug a tissue box around all spring. (It’ll hardly fit in your fanny pack.)

When food blogger-turned-cookbook author Melissa Coleman lived in Texas, she fell in love with the Southwest’s ubiquitous Tex-Mex cuisine. “The food was always simple and fresh but packed huge flavor—usually from the sauce,” she recalls.

Her love for the Texas spin on Mexican culinary tradition is what inspired her chipotle-garlic chopped salary recipe, from her new cookbook, The Minimalist Kitchen. When you combine fresh Tex-Mex flavor with a plant-rich ingredients list, the end result is a totally craveable salad, according to Coleman.

“It’s spicy, smoky, and sour from the chipotle vinaigrette. It’s salty and crunchy from the bacon. And it’s sweet from the charred corn.”

Coleman’s top tip for keeping salads fresh and exciting—no matter what flavor palate you’re working with—is to constantly diversify the texture and array of the ingredients you’re working with. There’s a whole pantry full of options to play with!

Chipotle-garlic chopped salad

Yields 4 salads

For the chipotle-garlic dressing:
1/2 cup olive oil
2 Tpsp pureed chipotles in adobo
1 Tbsp ketchup
1 Tbsp white wine vinegar
1 Tbsp mayonnaise
2 cloves garlic, smashed
1/2 tsp kosher salt
Squeeze of honey (optional)

For the sautéed corn:
2 tsp olive oil
1 1/2 cups frozen or fresh corn
1/4 tsp kosher salt

For the salad:
1 1/2 lb romaine, thinly sliced
20 sweet potato tortilla chips
1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese
1 15 oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
1⁄2 cup sliced grape tomatoes
1 avocado, diced
3 radishes, thinly sliced
1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

For the dressing
1. In a high-powered blender or food processor, add all of the dressing ingredients. Cover and blend on high until smooth, about 30 seconds. This yields one cup. Store covered in the fridge for up to a month. The dressing will separate and harden in the fridge. Run under warm water and shake to re-emulsify.

For the corn 
1. Heat a small skillet over medium-high. Once warm, add the oil and the corn. Cook for five minutes, stirring often. Add the salt and continuing cooking for five minutes more or until charred, stirring often.

For the salad 
1. Divide them evenly among four serving plates or serve family style in a large shallow bowl. Add the corn, tossing to combine. Shake the dressing just before serving and distribute evenly among the salads.

Why more fitness instructors are flying solo

Fitness instructor Lindsey Clayton’s alarm goes off at 6 a.m. on the regular. By 6:30, she’s packed her Puma bag with a change of clothes, a second pair of sneakers for her late-afternoon run, and a pair of headphones. Before the clock strikes 7:30, she’s already had a cup of coffee, cranked up the beats, and is 20 minutes into coaching the first of many workouts for the day at cult-favorite Barry’s Bootcamp.

And that’s only three days a week. On the others, she trades in treadmill sprints for a different vibe at CrossFit gym Solace, where she partners up with best friend Amber Reese to teach Brave Body Project, a 45-minute beat-based, dynamic full body workout combining strength training with light weights, gliders, resistance bands, and cardio. 

While the playlist always differs, one thing’s for sure: Clayton isn’t the only one hustling to build her personal brand, teaching at more than one studio. In fact, she’s part of a rising trend of super, free-agent instructors.

In major cities where boutique fitness destinations and workout hotspots are popping up faster than you can refill your Bkr bottle, more and more certified trainers are partnering with multiple venues at once. It used to be that instructors had to be super loyal to a studio in order to make a living (throwback to SoulCycle banning the competition’s boutique fitness instructors from its classes). But now? As they amass cult followings, they’re starting to essentially go on tour. Many of them, like Clayton, are leveraging large social media star power to grow their influence and business.

For the biggest stars in the sweat game, this is nothing new. In fact, some marquee names, like Aussie phenom Kayla Itsines, are free-agent by definition—since her “home studio” is virtual. But now early-career, budding free agents have more tools than ever to make the jump from company man (or, more likely, woman) to brand-name draw.

With Talent Hack—a new site created by Alexandra Bonetti, founder of buzzy New York City-based fitness chain Bari Studio (which aims to be the LinkedIn of fitness), studios and trainers can find each other more easily than ever before—making it easier to work out unorthodox arrangements.

And the massive digital boom happening right now that’s giving you at-home workouts that range from spin-and-stream giant Peloton to celeb-fave superstar trainers like Anna Kaiser is also potentially creating platforms for up-and-comers to get a place on your screens—and, they hope, your hearts. To help them with that? Places like NYC’s Performix House, which opened this spring. Attempting to be the SoHo House of fitness, it offers its instructors more than studio space: Trainers who join the team have access to an exclusive media and content studio to help them pump up their Instagram and grow their brand in the digital space (and IRL).

Alex Silver-Fagan, Nike master trainer, has definitely noticed a shift over the last few years. “When I was starting out in the fitness industry back in 2015, everyone stuck to one specific studio,” she says. Earlier last month, Silver-Fagan started teaching her Flow Into Strong class, a blend of yoga and strength training, at Performix House.

FitHouse, another newcomer studio startup set to open 12 locations in New York City by the end of the year, is also in on the free-agent action. “People love being influenced by ‘real’ people as they are more relatable and easy to connect with,” says Chase Rosen, brand director and founding partner at FitHouse. “It’s all about authenticity. Here in New York, instructors are able to build their personal brands by getting in front of hundreds of people per week. That’s why we support our instructors, both at FitHouse and on their own personal journeys.”

A trainer’s bustling personal brand is what Aaptiv, a workout app that uses trained instructors and perfectly timed playlists to bring the boutique fitness experience to the palm of your hand, relies on to draw in new users. Rather than lock talented individuals into non-compete opportunities, they’d rather offer a pedestal for the best talent that comes their way. “We like to think of ourselves as a platform for trainers,” says Meela Imperato, director of program development. “Every one of our trainers has different strengths, philosophies, and backgrounds. Meeting with clients can send them all over a city. So, we do everything we can to support them because we know that their success is also ultimately our success.”

Yet, other studios have seen results keeping things the old-fashioned way. Instructors at Rumble, the New York City-based boxing-inspired group fitness, teach there and there alone. The company, already valued at $80 million after only one year in operation, places a heavy investment on their talent, spending mass marketing dollars to promote them as a key part of their business strategy.

“I’ve been teaching group fitness for nearly 10 years, and I know that the bouncing from gym to gym lifestyle isn’t always sustainable,” says Andy Stern, general manager and founding trainer at Rumble. “Our trainers, who are all superstars, are the ones that make the class an experience every time. All of [them] receive equity in Rumble, so we all work together to increase the value of the company. We’ve created a culture where you, as a trainer, don’t want to work at another studio.” 

The question remains: Is the free agent instructor here to stay? Silver-Fagan says yes, for sure. “I think at first there was definitely some hostility from certain places about working at various studios,” she says. “But because this is the way the industry is headed, so many of my bosses understand that it’s a necessity in this industry. This is the future.”

For your steamier asana endeavors, the pros suggest keeping two major factors in mind when selecting a mat—grip and cleanliness. According to Chris Willey, founder of Yoloha Yoga, cork is superior to other materials in the hot room thanks to its antimicrobial and insulating properties. “Cork doesn’t actually absorb water,” he says. Instead, when the material gets wet, it releases a waxy substance called suberin that gives the material its non-slip quality.
